Future Fisheries

The aim of the project is to champion a low impact, profitable fishing industry in Wales where marine wildlife also thrives.

Future Fisheries is an essential part of the Wildlife Trust of South Wales’ work for Living Seas.

We believe it is important for people to understand and appreciate the marine environment as well as the range of activities and pressures the marine environment faces.

Welsh Fisheries

Commercial sea fishing takes place all around the Welsh coast.

Larger vessels over 10 metres fish offshore targeting fish such as turbot, brill, sole and scallops. Smaller boats under 10 metres fish in inshore waters and make up to 90% of the fishing fleet.

They primarily target shellfish such as whelks, lobsters and crabs using low impact methods such as potting.

Fish to eat

Choose wisely… think local.

Seafood is a tasty treat. When buying seafood, consider when and where it was caught, how it was caught and what size it is (most species have a minimum landing size).

To help you make your seafood choice we have used a simple traffic light system to evaluate the top ten fish/shellfish species, in terms of value that were landed into ports in south Wales in recent years.

Local means fish or shellfish caught in Welsh waters by welsh fishers/boats.

Low impact means fishing methods that have little or no environmental impact beyond the removal of the target species.
